Known for many inventions, analyses, and theories, such as the “Gaia Hypothesis” that suggests the Earth is a kind of self-regulating system, James Lovelock was a multi-talented inventor, scientist, environmentalist, and futurist. In the 1960s, he invented a tool that detected greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, such as chlorofluorocarbons, and ultimately supported controversial “climate engineering”-style projects to help reduce CO2, such as the use of algae. Lovelock also supported nuclear energy as a solution to the dirty energy created by fossil fuels.
