Corporate volunteering is a great way to build a companies’ community and employee engagement. These programs allow employees to contribute to important causes, often leading to increased job satisfaction and stronger team cohesion. When executed properly, these programs can also improve an organization’s public image, attract top talent, and increase customer engagement. Given their nature, these programs have an immense potential to positively contribute to a company’s sustainability goals.

When designing a corporate volunteering program with sustainability in mind, be sure to choose projects that benefit both the environment and your team. Consider:

  • Tree Planting Initiatives: Tree planting is another accessible way to have a visible community impact with your corporate volunteering program. Review our guide to tree planting programs here, or check out this list of reforestation-focused organizations to get started.
  • Partner with Environmental Organizations: Collaborating with existing environmental organizations can create lasting partnerships and especially impactful volunteer opportunities. Learn more about some of the top organizations in this field here.
  • Clean-Up Programs: Organizing or participating in a local clean-up is an accessible way to get your team involved in environmental volunteering while also having a visible community impact. Review our guide to starting a clean-up program here, or visit the “Action” link below for information on starting a “Trash-Free Seas”® Clean-Up in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy.

Once you have a program in mind, be sure that the volunteer activities themselves are conducted in an environmentally responsible and safe way. Encourage employees to carpool, bike, or take public transportation to the location. Additionally, minimize the use of single-use plastics by encouraging employees to bring their own reusable water bottles and lunches. By integrating some common-sense sustainability practices, you can ensure that your team is truly “walking the walk” of sustainable living, maximizing your positive environmental and community impact.
