Tree planting doesn’t just benefit the environment, it’s also an investment in the future of our communities. Beyond the ecological benefits of sequestering carbon dioxide and producing oxygen, trees play a crucial role in improving quality of life. Especially in cities, trees provide essential shade, reducing temperatures and mitigating the urban heat island effect. By volunteering with local tree planting initiatives, individuals can actively contribute to fostering a healthier community for all. In addition to the environmental impact, community tree planting events bring together like-minded individuals, which encourages deep connections and fosters a sense of belonging. Volunteering for tree planting activities can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

There are many ways to get involved with tree planting in your community. A good place to start is an online search for “tree planting [your area].” Depending on where you live, environmental organizations, local governments, parks departments, faith-based organizations, and/or community groups may be hosting events in your area.

If there aren’t existing events in your area, you could even bring together your fellow community members to host your own tree planting event! Just be sure to obtain landowner permission for any plantings, plant native species wherever possible, and have a plan for maintenance after the tree is planted. Check out the “Action” and “Definition” links below for more tips on how to host an impactful tree planting event.

If volunteering in-person on a tree planting event is not appealing or accessible to you, you can still have a positive impact by supporting reforestation funds. By participating in the 1y4e Journey, you’re already gaining point-credits that count toward actual trees planted on your behalf. To take it a step further, check out this list of reforestation-focued nonprofit organizations that would love to have your support. Thank you for your dedication to environmental stewardship!
