The type of insulation you use is as important as the insulation itself. Insulation is a means of cushioning the spaces within your home to create a barrier that reduces airflow. It is an energy-efficient, cost-saving method that controls the heating and cooling of your home. Insulation in and of itself is great for conserving energy; however, the materials used are not necessarily environmentally- or home-friendly. Fiberglass insulation, the pink fluff you see within most homes, contains chemicals such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), flame retardants, formaldehyde, and isocyanates (EPA). If you come in contact with it, fiberglass can irritate the eyes, nose, and skin and may cause respiratory issues and headaches. It should be noted that similar materials are also found in polyurethane (foam) mattresses. Better, more eco-friendly options are materials such as sheep wool, Therma cork, denim, and cotton. These materials require less energy to manufacture and can be sustainably sourced. Want to learn more about green insulation? Check out the article, The Complete Guide to Eco-Friendly Insulation.”
