Founder and creator of The Whole Earth Catalog, CoEvolution Quarterly, Global Business Network, and Long Now Foundation and outspoken author on climate themes, Steward Brand is an iconoclastic voice in the movement toward sustainability. He studied biology at Stanford University, graduating in 1960, and lives in California on a tugboat moored in the San Francisco Bay. Brand was a member of the “merry pranksters” and lobbied NASA to release a photo from space of the whole earth, eventually using the powerful “earthrise” image on the cover of the Whole Earth Catalog. Brand championed “scenario thinking” for planning and strategy that makes the most of technology and engineering toward pragmatic sustainable ends.
