Innovation will be one of the keys to solving the climate crisis. New technologies offer a way for us as a society to “innovate our way out of this mess.” While innovation alone won’t solve all of our problems, it plays a crucial role by providing more sustainable alternatives to current systems.

Innovation is a continuous process that is always shaping and reshaping human society. As early as 4,000 years ago, people in ancient China discovered how to use coal for heating purposes. During the Industrial Revolution, the use of coal expanded significantly with the invention of the steam engine, which required coal to create the steam. In the 1880s, coal began to be used to generate electricity, and by 1961, coal had become the main source of electricity generation in the United States. However, though coal was a major force in humanity’s growth up until this point, we’ve now learned that burning coal produces carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that is contributing to global warming. So, humanity is innovating again by developing renewable and sustainable energy alternatives. A similar process is occurring in many industries. In the “Innovation” category, the 1y4e team has outlined some of the top innovations helping us to develop a more sustainable society.

Even if you aren’t an inventor, you can still play a crucial role in supporting this effort. The best way to support this process is by being an early adopter of technologies that align with your values. Whether it’s installing solar panels at home, driving an electric car, or supporting companies that invest in green technologies, individual choices help build momentum for future sustainable innovation. Consumers can also “vote with their wallets” by buying sustainable products, therefore encouraging further investment in sustainable technology. Additionally, you can advocate for policies that fund research and incentivize green innovation, such as tax credits for renewable energy or funding for climate tech accelerators. By supporting sustainable innovation, we can contribute to a future where our systems contribute to a thriving planet, instead of working against it.
