Michelle Stuart engages with the land and landscape in very direct ways. She uses natural materials from specific sites (or creatures) to make works on paper, books, sculptures, gardens, cairns, or other site-specific works. Her early works employed the act of rubbing dirt onto paper or scrolls (including a 460-foot-long scroll at the Niagara River Gorge in 1975). In these ways, she’s “bringing land art into the gallery.” Stuart is also known for mapping the maturation of a seed in her Seed Calendar Drawings or combining grids of photographs that use a pseudo-scientific esthetic to convey natural themes and processes with a poetic touch.
