1. Review the requirements: Each publication has its own process, and many papers have word limits. Be sure to review all requirements before you start your draft.
2. Pick a topic: A LTE should address a recent article, event, or policy issue. If you’re responding to a specific article, it’s helpful to identify the article by name.
3. Identify both an issue and a solution: Identifying a problem is important, but be sure to also provide a solution and call to action. Suggest what readers should do to help, and keep in mind that your reader may be a policymaker themselves.
4. Proofread: Before you send your letter, take some time to proofread your letter for spelling, grammar, and accuracy. Be sure to fact-check yourself and all of your sources.
