Vandana Shiva is an Indian scholar and activist, and a pioneer of the global anti-GMO movement. In the 1980s, a gas leak from a pesticide manufacturing plant led Shiva to write The Violence of the Green Revolution, which showed how chemical-intensive agriculture was harming farmers, ecosystems, and communities at large. This work grew into other related efforts, such as Navdanya, a national movement and seed-saving network that promotes organic farming, environmental justice, and community solidarity. Under her guidance, Navdanya has set up 120+ community seed banks and trained farmers in agroecology methods through their Navdanya Biodiversity Conservation Farm.
