Terry Evans is a celebrated American photographer. Evans grew up in Kansas and uses her work to highlight the natural beauty of the American Midwest, while also documenting the impacts humans have had on the land. To do this, she uses a wide variety of techniques, ranging from aerial photos of entire landscapes to intimate portraits of individual environmental activists.

The photo above is from one of Evans’ earliest works, her “Prairie Scrolls” collection. In 1978, Evans agreed to help document the untouched native prairies around Salina, Kansas. These photographs are taken close-up and therefore emphasize the rich diversity of flora and fauna living in these “virgin prairies.” This early work and the questions it raised for her inspired much of her future work.
