Protests and boycotts have long been a central part of political and social movements. By bringing awareness to issues and demonstrating widespread support, protests and boycotts can help shift public opinion, pressure decision-makers, and lead to real action, especially on urgent issues that are not being adequately addressed through traditional channels. By participating in a protest or boycott, you’re aligning your actions with your values in a meaningful way.

Before attending a protest, take a few moments to prepare. Research the organization hosting the action to be sure they’re aligned with your values and refresh yourself on your rights. If possible, plan to go with friends, and if not, make a plan to check in with a trusted person afterwards. Finally, gear up: wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, bring water and snacks, and carry only what you need. Visit the “Definition” link below for more tips.

Boycotting is another powerful form of pressure. By “voting with your wallet,” you can encourage companies to improve their practices and shift public perception. This can be especially powerful when combined with awareness campaigns and other actions.

If you’re looking for a place to start, Fridays for Future is a youth-led movement that organizes climate actions around the world — visit the “Action” link below to find or start an action in your area. You can also browse 1y4e’s Advocacy category for organizations that align with your values. Whether you’re protesting, boycotting, or both, every action you take helps build momentum for change.
