In addition to the environmental benefits, adopting more sustainable business practices contributes to organizational success through cost savings, brand reputation, and customer acquisition. However, while many green practices can be adopted for no or little cost, others come with associated up-front costs. Luckily, there are a variety of grants available to support businesses in their adoption of sustainable business practices.

Green business grants are offered by governments, nonprofits, and corporations in order to assist and aid businesses in implementing sustainable practices. While there are grants available for any business, many grants target small businesses and startups. For example, the Rural Energy For America Program (REAP) helps rural small businesses install renewable energy systems. Each grant has different eligibility criteria, application processes, and compliance requirements tailored to the funding organization’s specific goals. Therefore, it’s important to thoroughly review all available information on a grant before applying, to ensure that it is aligned with your organizational goals, long-term plan, and capacity.

To find more grant programs tailored to your organizational goals, use an online grant database or reach out to local business associations in your area of practice.
