Natural fibers are durable, comfortable, low impact, and can actually help keep soil healthy. Hemp farming has been illegal in the states for decades, resulting in a larger carbon footprint as manufacturing had to be done overseas. The 2018 Farm Bill finally legalized the sale and transfer of industrial hemp across state lines. An outdoor company that has built its brand on being conscious of its environmental impact, Patagonia has developed an innovative performance material by blending hemp with organic cotton, recycled polyester, and TENCEL Lyocell.

Another natural material that is renewable and biodegradable, wool has been a naturally sourced material used by many indigenous communities for blanket-making and weaving of baskets. Wool is known for being a very durable material, stretching up to 50% when wet and 30% when dry, but still bouncing back to its original shape when released.

Created by two brothers, RareForm is a gender inclusive everyday accessories brand with a mission to repurpose every billboard on the planet into one-of-a-kind goods. Made from water-resistant material, billboards are a great material for sturdy tote or duffel bags and accessories like coolers or luggage tags. RareForm collects its billboards across the United States to one of its processing facilities in LA or Nashville where the billboards are cut up to create the product. Currently, RareForm has repurposed 80% of all billboards in the United States, that’s over 255,000 billboards turned into everyday accessories. While we appreciate RareForm’s mission to recycle, we hope to see further transparency about sustainable efforts within the pre- and post-product production process.
