Utilizing existing materials and transforming them in functional and conceptual ways via a form of “adaptive reuse,” Dan Peterman’s activist work is very engaging. He has made a 100-foot long picnic table of recycled plastic and often has installations you can sit upon or walk over. Formal and often vernacular or simple/humble forms like a house, shelf, or table stimulate dialog on various ecological, technological, and social issues. Peterman works with functional processes connected to the waste stream to create art that sometimes improves the real world too, actually sequestering carbon as well as expanding thoughts about it.
